FACT CHECK: While Tate Reeves Gave Himself A Raise, Thousands of Hardworking Mississippians Make At Or Less Than Minimum Wage

Jackson, MS – Yesterday, after speaking at MEC’s Hobnob Mississippi, Tate Reeves was asked about raising the minimum wage, to which he replied, “There aren’t a lot of people in Mississippi working for minimum wage.” According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost 20,000 Mississippians make at or below minimum wage.

While Mississippi has the lowest per-capita income in the United States on his watch, Tate Reeves refuses to cut the car tag fee to put more money in working families’ pockets. As Tate Reeves refuses to cut the nation’s highest grocery tax, he somehow found time to give himself a nearly $40,000 raise. Not to mention, Reeves refuses to expand Medicaid which would produce as many as 20,000 new good-paying jobs and provide an additional $212 million over four years to the state general fund.

“While thousands of Mississippians struggle to put food on the table, Tate Reeves doesn’t know who they are because he is too busy looking out for himself and his country club buddies,” said Democratic Party Chair Cheikh Taylor. “Tate Reeves gave himself a nearly $40,000 raise but doesn’t think hardworking Mississippians deserve a raise because he only cares about himself.”
