In considering why budget negotiations broke down, I have a few questions that Republican leaders should answer:
-
The conferees reached a compromise on the hospital tax at $57 million. Why did Sen. Alan Nunnelee, two days later, withdraw that agreement on behalf of the Senate? Did Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant tell him to do so, or did Gov. Haley Barbour tell him to do so?
-
The regular session costs less than a special session. Why would the Republican leadership agree to a costly special session at a time when our economy is struggling?
-
Does Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant have no qualms about handing over his legislative leadership duties to the governor in a special session? (I thought the people elected Phil Bryant to lead the Senate, not Haley Barbour.)
-
Why squirrel away $60 million for 2011 when we need it this year? For future budget shortfalls, you say? Could it be because Phil Bryant and the Republican leadership aren’t running for office until 2011?
I’ve got more questions, but I’d love to get real answers to those questions first. (Heading off to hold my breath now…)
